Job Quitting Experience

Writer: Anisha AnilAnisha Anil

Hello people! How are you?

I guess this blog post has to be the most difficult one I've ever written. In September 2021, I resigned from my first company where I worked for over three years and decided to take a career break. So, in this blog post, I will share my thoughts on how my experience was after quitting the job for about 10 months. Before coming up to any conclusions, I made sure that I followed this one simple rule- Telling the truth to myself without underestimating or overestimating the situations or emotions.

What questions did I answer before quitting my job?
  • What is the issue with my current job?

Is it the Boss or company's culture?

Do I feel there has been no advancement in my skill set or financial growth?

Or everything is fine; I just have the impression that the work is monotonous.

My response was the last one.

  • What will happen in the worst-case scenario?

In my case, the worst-case scenario is that I would end up joining the same company in the same position, with the same team and client.

How did I deal with the decision- socially, financially and mentally?

Initially, I intended to share this news only with my close family and friends. However, after some days, when my colleagues began asking which company I had joined, in the heat of the moment, I just shared it on my Instagram story. Did I regret sharing it publicly? Sometimes Yes, as there had been few instances- Once, at a social gathering, I ran into an old friend, who asked jokingly how much I am earning from my blogs and undoubtedly, I felt sad and like crying which I did. Another one was when a random Uncle came over and asked my parents how much I earn, as his daughter earns 21 LPA. Financially, I made sure to not indulge in any major unnecessary expenses throughout the year and save up money as much as I can. I created an emergency fund covering two years of needs and expenses according to my lifestyle. I also purchased term and health insurance for myself and my family members to avoid unforeseen expenses. Along with all of this, I was regularly exercising, meditating and most importantly, journaling, which helped me deal with the situation mentally and efficiently.

How did I spend my days after quitting my job?

I wanted to try out a few things such as Web3 or blockchain development as these were one of the popular topics during the pandemic, as well as machine learning, content writing, video editing, blogging, freelancing, web development, content creation etc.

I also tried Inner Engineering Online which you can check by clicking the following link: https://www.anishaanil.com/post/inner-engineering-online

My take

I once came across this statement by Jeff Bezos:

I knew that when I was 80 I was not going to regret having tried this. I was not going to regret trying to participate in this thing called the Internet that I thought was going to be a really big deal. I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not ever having tried.

These lines were stuck in my head and every time, I considered whether I would regret quitting my job, not only when I will be 80, but even a year later, the answer was always 100% NO.

Just a few add-ons:

  • I made sure to tell the truth not only to myself, but also to my parents and a few close friends. The reason for this is that there may be situations where you feel alone and having someone to talk to openly without the fear of being judged will be extremely helpful.

  • Having leverage. In my case, it was my skill set. Even if things didn't go as planned, I was able to rely on my skills and get a job in 15 days.

I hope you learnt something through reading this blog. If Yes, then make sure to like the blog, comment, share and subscribe to the email newsletter if you haven't yet. I post a blog every Monday at 7 pm IST, until then
